'Be Kind' Bottle

I am continually trying to integrate the related disciplines within which I work. This bottle is one example I asked Bob Crooks to blow for me a series of bottles in cased glass. The one on this page is rectangular, approximately 13cm x 10cm x 5cm, and has three layers of colour- clear glass, purple and opaque black, with an irregularly shaped stopper.

Before engraving, I embarked on a series of etchings, taking as a basis, scenes from family life. One of these etchings can be seen in my printmaking pages. I then carried through some of these images, but this time, using the three-dimensional metaphor of the glass bottle.

This is the bottle, as engraved with phrases from family life, photographed by reflected light, to show up the engraving. The colours of the glass, changed as they are by cutting into the layers, do not show up here

The images on the top and bottom of the bottle are shown here. These have been photographed with a combination of reflected and transmitted light, so that the surface engraving is revealed, and also the effects of cutting into the glass layers.

This shows another view of the bottle, this time from the side. The lettering on the top is clearly visible, as well as the design on the side.

I intend to continue with this series of bottles, and striving to integrate engraving with the image-making processes inherent in printmaking.
